The effects of the asteroid impact on the Monheim Alb region

Numerous info-panels present an interesting introduction to the UNESCO Global Geopark Ries and provide an overview of the locations from which visitors can see the crater structure in the terrain particularly well. In addition, the Geopark Info-Point Monheim surprises with a variety of “local” topics: Suevite rock studied in the nearby Otting quarry transformed the Nördlinger Ries volcanic crater - virtually “overnight” - into a meteorite crater. Info-panels explain the karst formations of the Monheim Alb, the southernmost spur of the Franconian Alb. The effects of the Ries event on the Monheim Alb and the exciting landscape history of the buried valley of the primordial Main near Monheim complete the knowledge spectrum of the Monheim Geopark Info-Point.

The Monheim Geopark Info-Point complements the Geopark Info-Point in the JUFA Hotel in Nördlingen, the Geopark Info-Point in front of the town hall in Deiningen and the Geopark Info-Point in the former court pharmacy in Wemding. It forms another important location for interested visitors in the southeastern UNESCO Global Geopark Ries.
