The UNESCO Global Geopark Ries testifies to an impactful event: About 15 million years ago, an asteroid struck the Earth and created an enormous crater. Even today, impressive traces of this cosmic catastrophe are still evident all over the region. On nature trails and scenic overlooks, on guided tours and in Info-Centers, there is a lot to discover about the creation, geology and history of the Ries Crater. Many special programs are available especially for schools.
